Jennifer Smith

Guest House & Cookery Class Owner

Since leaving Tante Marie Jennifer has set up a guest house in Morocco called Dar Roumana where she is also running cookery classes. Dar Roumana has been recommended by the Lonely Planet guides as one of Morocco’s leading hotels.

A graduate of Duke University and a Fulbright scholar in Damascus, former investment banker in London and trained chef…during a holiday from Tante Marie during the term break, Jen fell in love with Fes and decided to create Dar Roumana.

The restoration work was carried out by local artisans supervised by Jennifer, who undertook much of the restoration of the beautifully sculpted cedar doors herself.   She was one of the youngest entrepreneurs and the first American to open a guesthouse in the Fes medina, a story that aroused the interest of CNN who featured Dar Roumana in their series “Design 360” in October 2004.

Jennifer is currently in Vientiane, Laos where she is working to create and strengthen vocational training restaurants for marginalised youth with the NGO Friends International.
